How are Stair Lifts Installed?

When installing a stair lift, we attach it to the stair treads, not the wall, so there is very little trace left behind when the stair lift is removed. We always get as close to the wall or railing as possible to leave room on the stairs for other members of the home.

We take measurements specific to your stairs or we use our PhotoSurvey system for curved stairlifts.  A curved rail stair lift is custom manufactured to specifically fit your staircase.

How Long Does it Take to Install a Stair Lift?

A stairlift can typically be installed in a half day but if there are major complexities it may take longer… we’ll tell you that before we begin.

We’ll always ensure the stair lift installation meets your needs and is safe for the user as well as others in the home.

If you have a construction, technical or engineering type background, it’s possible, but since safety is an obvious concern with a stair lift installation, there are a number of factors you should definitely consider before doing it yourself. 

The Positives

  • If it’s a straight stair lift install, it may be possible

  • If there’s a supplier (manufacturer/dealer) willing to support you with installation questions

  • If you have technical knowledge, good measurements and understanding of mathematical information to make the necessary calculations to get the right parts. It’s important that the rail length is exactly the right length for a safe stair lift experience!

The Negatives

  • Some stair lift application can be complex or confusing

  • Make sure you have all the correct tools for cutting and joining the rails properly

  • Most stair lift manufacturers do not provide warranty for stair lift self installation

  • If the stair lift breaks down, it may be difficult to find technical support if you self installed the stair lift

  • If the stair lift involves turns or curves, without the proper tools it will be challenging to provide the exact measurements to ensure a perfectly smooth and safe ride. Many manufacturers will not accept customer orders for curved stair lift installation
